Today, more than 325 biotech companies in India generate revenues of about $ 2 billion have contributed to the country being third among the top five biotech leaders in the Asia-Pacific region. Biotechnology is a stream that is extremely broad in nature and includes subjects like Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry and Engineering and is also concerned with many other subjects like Health and Medicine, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Cropping system and Crop Management, Ecology, Cell Biology, Soil science and Soil Conservation, Bio-statistics, Plant Physiology, Seed Technology etc.
A combination of Biology and Technology, the field thrives on the proper industrial utilization of organic things like cells and bacteria. Biotechnology with its many branches can be applied in various sectors like building up medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, productivity enhancement, boosting energy production, conservation, animal husbandry, bringing advancement in the quality of seeds, insecticides, fertilizers, keeping pollution in check and proper waste management. In short, Biotechnology can be described as the application of our knowledge and understanding of biology to meet practical requirements. Biotechnology has the potential to assist farmers in lowering on farm chemicals inputs and producing high value added commodities. As Biotechnology is a subject with a lot of promise, students are getting attracted to this stream of science. India emerging as one of the biggest leaders in biotechnology, the employment opportunities are also enormous.
