The scope of this field has also been taken to new heights by the inclusion of cosmetology which involves improving people’s appearance. The job of a dentist involves the basic examination of teeth and mouths of patients to diagnose oral and dental disorders and providing appropriate timely surgical, medical and other treatments to them. Technological advancements have also been introduced in extensively to this field in the past couple of decades or so in the form of computers and resonance imaging. Dentists are able to provide necessary treatment like filling, crowning of the teeth, scaling, extraction, fitting artificial replacements to patients from all walks of life and in different case scenarios.
The minimal academic requirement of a dentist is a degree in dental science called BDS. On the commencement of this, one can progress with the MDS or the Masters in Dental Sciences course.
Orthodontics; Periodontics; Operative Dentistry or Endodontics; Prosthodontics; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Pediatric Dentistry (related to children) and Oral Pathology are the major specialization in the course.
Candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) course.
Duration: The BDS (Bachelor of Dental Science) degree course continues for 4 years and is bifurcated into 4 primary parts each of which is one year long, followed by one year of rotating internship. Basic anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and microbiology are taught during the first two years of the programme.
Specialization and full on training are given to students in the last two semesters. Mandatory registration from the Dental Council of India apart from successfully completing the BDS course can give you to license to practice dentistry. Supplementary training in the form of the Masters degree in dentistry called the MDS is also available.
Government institutions may charge anything from 1 to 3 lakhs and private institutions under management quota may charge 5 to 10 lakhs as capitation fee.
