Shivaji University

Shivaji University was named after the creator of the Maratha kingdom. The University was started on 18th November, 1962 inaugurated by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the former President of India. Main aim behind the foundation of this University was to cater to the local requirements of south Maharashtra. The authority of the University is extended on four districts i.e. Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur of nearly 2, 00,000 students learning in 275 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region of Maharashtra possesses rich and different social cultural tradition. The motto set before the University included creating situations of higher education available to rural youth, operating fundamental and applied research in the field of science and humanities to make sure local development and growth, while the University was established through the Shivaji University act of 1962.

In 1962, the University initiated operating with 34 affiliated colleges and nearly 14, 000 students with 5 post-graduate departments. Currently the number of affiliated colleges has increased equal to 248 and student’s number equal to 2, 00,000 with 34 Postgraduate Departments. The University conveys education in 10 major streams of arts, commerce, social science, science, education, fine arts, medicine, law, ayurvedic medicine, engineering and technology. It has initiated post-graduate teaching centre at Solapur in 3 post-graduate Departments.

In early two decades the attempts were focused on growth of higher education and starting of new colleges in various sections in the four districts of the university. The University aims at 'taking education to the people'.

Currently several steps have been taken to increase the standards of teaching and research as per the global standards. This will be achieved through higher education and research in fastly rising streams like industrial chemistry, space science, environmental science, bio-chemistry, sericulture, polymer chemistry and computer Science, with the core science stream. The University department of physics has currently been acknowledged by UGC for their special assistance programme and department of research support. New research areas in these departments are Super conductors Energy, Bio-diversity and Bio-technology. The University has also established the University-Industry Interaction cells in four districts.

The University has future plans to start School of Rural Management, Research Institute of Bio-Technology and Advanced Centre of Information Technology.
